I come to photography after years as a professional, trained musician. Here is what I've learned.

A truly great song requires a mood, a dynamic. It requires an element of surprise, and yet still an elegant structure. The size and the orchestration is unimportant, whether it be a Wagnerian Orchestra or a Lonely Street Performer. The music must say something; it has to convey the message that words alone have failed.

That is not all. The music must also grab you in a way that the sum of the parts could never predict. It may remind us of a moment, or simply tap into the vast estate of human emotion. And if the song can achieve this without revealing it's true intentions, then it is truly a work of art.

This music is all around us.

These images are all around us.

I strive to take these lessons and many more into my work.

Darren at the Coast

A portrait of a young man about to live an adventure.  His chosen path?  The beaches of Hawaii, sun, surfing and simply surviving on whatever he can carry on his back.  Wisdom or folly?  I suppose time will tell.  Whatever the case, I was happy to be called to document the anxiety, the melancholy, the excitement and the youthful exuberance for him and his family.

To all you brides and grooms out there, you think you have passion?

Prove it.
